Spring Hockey in Canada,

Spring Hockey is competitive ice hockey played from mid-March through June, picking up once spring break and the winter season have wrapped up.

Unlike winter minor hockey, it's privately run. Teams, tryouts, and tournaments are organized independently, and players are chosen on ability rather than registration order. Most programs hold tryouts in the late fall or early in the new year and set their own fees — a season usually runs $600–1,200.

Players are grouped by birth year. Everyone born in 2015 plays on a 2015 team, whatever association they skate for in the winter.

For a lot of families, that's the appeal: more ice time for a kid who loves the game, a chance to develop, tougher competition, and a dressing room full of players they'd never meet in a normal winter.
